Obituary for Bernard McDonnell

New City - Bernard McDonnell of New City NY went to his rest on Thursday, September 2 2021 in Golden CO. with his loving daughter Kathleen at his side. He was 91. Bernard was born in County Clare in Ireland on August 19, 1930. Bernard grew up on a farm and apprenticed as a carpenter. He came to the United States in 1954 where he met his future wife Harriet in Brooklyn NY. They married in 1958, moving to New City in 1970 with their four children. Bernard worked for the City of New York for 20 years, retiring in 1980. In his retirement, Bernard pursued his passions: carpentry, landscaping and gardening while also doing handyman work in the community in addition to serving as an usher for St. Augustine's Church. Bernard took great pride in his work and was an exacting craftsman. Bernard also was known for his impressive vegetable garden from which he would share its bounty with neighbors and friends. Bernard enjoyed frequent trips to Ireland to visit his brothers and their families as well as trips to the Catskills. He enjoyed golfing and taking walks around Rockland Lake as well as spending time at the Irish Center in Blauvelt where he would dance with his beloved Harriet. Survivors include his brother Michael McDonnell of Ennis in Co. Clare Ireland, sisters in law: Peggy and Kathleen, as well as by his many nieces and nephews, his sons Kevin McDonnell of Harriman NY, James (Lauren) McDonnell of Lynhurst NJ, his daughters Kathleen (Todd) McDonnell Fuller of Golden Co. and Karen Ann (Ken) Schwartz of Montgomery NY, his two grandchildren: Rian Fuller and Kevin Schwartz. Bernard was predeceased by his wife Harriet in 2016. The family would like to thank everyone who helped Bernard over the years, looking in on him and seeing to his welfare. His children are beyond words to express their gratitude for the many kindnesses shown to their father. A funeral service will be held on October 8, 2021 at 11:30am at St. Anthony's Church 36 West Nyack Rd in Nanuet, NY. Please call St. Anthony's at 845-623-2138 for further details.
