Obituary for Geoffrey Coghlan Hazel

Geoffrey Coghlan Hazel, born June 21st, 1929, passed away Tuesday evening August 9th, 2022, in Golden, Colorado, with his wife, Conny, by his side.

Geoffrey came to America in 1957 and began a lengthy career as a mechanical engineer. He worked for Otto H. York Company from the moment he stepped off the boat until his retirement in 1993, though he continued to consult around the world until he was 80 years old.

Geoffrey was born in Portsmouth, England, and grew up on the streets of London during World War II. He later joined Her Majesty’s Armed Forces (also known as the British Army) and was stationed in Hong Kong.

After the army, Geoffrey married Margaret High in Luton, England and then immigrated to New Jersey in 1957. There they raised their two daughters, Jane and Alison.

Geoffrey enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a tennis player, skier, and avid golfer. He loved Lake Hopatcong and lived on the Lake for over 50 years.

Geoffrey met Conny while working in Belgium and they married on November 18th, 1998. They spent summers in New Jersey on Lake Hopatcong and winters in Sarasota, Florida and then permanently moved to Colorado, near Alison.

Geoffrey is survived by his wife Conny Geets, his daughters Jane Ochs (Jerald Ochs) and Alison Hazel (Michael Gefell), and Conny’s children Andy Cornelissen (Erica Cornelissen - Nuyts) and Annick Mertes-Cornelissen (Tim Mertes). Also, his grandchildren: Geoffrey, Jeremy, Alexander and August, and Conny’s grandchildren Liam, Devin, Keeran, Rohan, Maite’ and Finn. And his loving dog, Princess.

He will be remembered for his English charm, his appreciation of people, his love of family, and his long-lasting friendships.

A Celebration of Life for Geoffrey will be held at a later date in New Jersey.
