Obituary for Lyle LeRoy Shanks

Lyle LeRoy Shanks, 84, of Golden, Colorado, went to be with the Lord on October 22, 2021. He had recently beat cancer but ultimately succumbed to a combination of other heath factors that were too much for his body to manage. Lyle passed peacefully at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood while surrounded by his family.

Lyle was born June 3, 1937, to Harold and Vera Shanks of Gordon, Nebraska. He graduated from Gordon High School in 1955 and went directly to the military where he served in the Army until 1957. From there he attended Chadron State College where he graduated in 1961. Lyle later obtained a master’s degree from the University of Denver and earned his Certified Public Accountant license in the state of Colorado.

Lyle was joined in marriage to Bernita Haverkamp of Rushville, Nebraska on April 13, 1960. To this union of 61 years two sons were born, Mike Shanks (Darcy) and Rod Shanks, both of Denver, Colorado. He was also blessed with three grandchildren, Brandon, Anna, and Cameron. Lyle served his family, friends, and his church on a daily basis. He enjoyed motorcycles, tennis, golf, camping, traveling, and spending time in Grand Lake with family. He was a quiet servant, constantly helping others from the sidelines in hopes of going unnoticed.

Lyle spent most of his professional career providing tax consulting services with a small group of partners. He retired at the age of 75 and continued to volunteer at his church in areas where his specific skills were beneficial.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his two sisters Lois Gran and Virginia Hazard, and a nephew. He is survived by his wife, sons, grandchildren, 4 nieces and 5 nephews.

Lyle was a humble and private man with a preference to leave this earthly life quietly without a service. He would want to express his deep appreciation for his wonderful friends and clients over the many years.
