Obituary for Marie Estelle Gillis

Marie Estelle Gillis, born Marie Estelle Garvin in La Porte, Indiana on February 14, 1928, passed away on January 20, 2023.

Marie married Duncan Leonard Gillis February 7, 1948 and settled in Clawson, Michigan where they owned and operated a flower shop known as Duncanwyllos. In their time in Clawson, they raised eight children: Marie Kathleen Gillis (Ralph Caligiuri) of Golden, Michael Francis Gillis of Aurora, Patrick Joseph Gillis of Denver, Duncan Leonard Gillis of Golden, Mark Edward Gillis of Golden, Beth Ann (John) Perrill of Mendocino, California, Kemp Charles of Golden, and Shawn Christopher (Lorie) Gillis of Golden. The family grew up in a white farmhouse on Nahma Street.

Marie graduated from Metropolitan State College in Denver on May 19, 1985 with a degree in mental health counseling. She worked at West Pines and Developmental Pathways to help people in need. This spoke to her helping and nurturing personality that she carried with her throughout her entire life.

During her life, Marie enjoyed many gatherings with her large family such as spaghetti dinners on Sunday nights, birthday parties, and holiday celebrations. Marie loved to go shopping and seeing movies at the movie theater. She took great pride in her appearance. She remembered everyone's birthday and for many years would send a two dollar bill in a card to her grandchildren. Marie especially loved hearing stories from her grandchildren as well as telling her story of her life.

Marie was predeceased in death by her brother, Joseph F. Baumkratz. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth Ramsey of Boyne City, Michigan, her eight children, 13 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
