Obituary for Rebecca Winters

On the morning of February 18th, 2022, we lost Becci Winters, our daughter, mother, aunt, sister, co-worker, and friend. After a struggle with depression, she returned home to the arms of her mother, whom she so desperately missed.

Rebecca, named after her storied 4th great-grandmother, was born in Salt Lake City on January 4th, 1985. She was the youngest of four children to LaVerl and Marianne Winters. Immediately she was the life-size doll her older sister Cynthia had been wanting. Bec relished being the youngest and loved being watched over by her older brothers.

As a young girl, she was so caring and compassionate, always thinking of the needs of others, including animals. For example, the family was struggling to keep fish alive. After half a dozen of them, it was discovered that Becci felt the fish needed out from their bowl. So, she had been taking them for walks around the block, then putting them back so they could rest from the tiring “walk.”

When she was only 13, Rebecca lost her mother, who had been battling cancer. Becci spent the rest of her life searching to fill that void. Nearly everything she did was to try and become who she thought her mother wanted her to be. From her career in business administration to a glass office desk and a file for everything, she was her mother’s daughter.
Becci was briefly married to Kevin Peck in Salt Lake City, Utah, and then moved to Newport News, VA. One of her 26 moves in which she was a self-proclaimed expert.

The biggest event of her life happened in 2008 when she had her son Charlie. She lived her life for him and never hesitated to take him somewhere different and show him new things. Rebecca supported Charlie in all his ever-changing passions. She was so proud of his talents and for him being such a compassionate soul.

Together with her 80-year-old father, she graduated from Red Rocks Community College. She studied acting and business administration and served as an officer in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Rebecca loved working and doing a job well done. She was adored by nearly everyone she worked near. From the crew at Bob’s Atomic Burgers, colleagues at Mount Vernon Country Club or her co-workers and friends at WorldRemit, she appreciated being referred to as the glue that keeps the office together. Considering most of her co-workers were in London, England, that’s some strong glue.

To know Rebecca is to see that she had a strong opinion of pajamas in public and a distaste of folks who chewed loudly. She loved the Denver Broncos and the Utah Jazz, subscriptions on Amazon, traveling to Meow Wolf exhibits, and hot wings from the Peppermill. Becci couldn’t get enough of arts and museums of every kind, butterflies, bees, and the colors purple and yellow. Bec enjoyed watching endless Friends reruns or paint nights with her son, and Rebecca was always up for goofy nights out with real-life friends. True to being a Winters, Bec also loved board games; well, she loved to win at board games.

Above all, she valued her memories with friends and family. So she made sure she collected reminders of all the people, places, and experiences that she loved. Said another way, she was a truly organized hoarder.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Half-brother Byron, her grandparents, and a hamster named Oreo.

Rebecca left behind numerous friends, co-workers, and a pitbull puppy named Murtagh. Becci is survived by her son Charlie, her father LaVerl “Tony” of Evergreen, CO, sister and “person” Cynthia McDonnell of Golden, CO, and brothers Russell (Annica) Winters of Oakley, ID, and Anthony (Joddie) Winters of South Jordan, UT. She also has 19 nieces and nephews, three of which were some of her closest friends, Bobby, Christian, and Alex McDonnell.

We will always be grateful for the short time we had with you, Rebecca, and for all the memories we made, but they will never be enough. You will be genuinely missed until we meet again.

A funeral service is scheduled for 6 PM on Monday, February 28th, 2022, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building on 610 Coors Street. In place of flowers, please consider donating to a GoFundMe for her son Charlie or just share a smile with someone who might be having a tough day.
